About T. King Flutes
I am Travis, a Vancouver Island based maker of keyless Irish flutes. I primarily work with African Blackwood, Mopane, and English Boxwood (provided stock is available). I am open to other woods being used, but these are generally regarded as the most readily available, reliable, and most suitable species.
I started to offer flutes for sale in 2023 after dedicating a year of study and experimentation, honing in on a process and product I was comfortable offering. All flutes are made using a wood lathe and hand tools. Great care is taken to ensure the quality matches or exceeds the industry standard but given the hand made nature, each instrument has it's own unique fingerprint and voice.
My aim is to provide an affordable wooden flute for those who are looking for the tactile and aural experience of a quality wooden instrument at an approachable price point.

Handmade
Many tools are used in the making of a flute. The process starts on a wood lathe and ends up on my lap under a magnifying glass. As each instrument is shaped by hand on the lathe, no two are exactly the same.

The process starts by sizing and rough shaping billets of wood. These are then allowed to age for a time to allow any of the internal stresses from the wood fibres to settle.
These rough billets are then mounted to the lathe and drilled out. Once again the pieces will spend some time resting and settling into their new shapes.
Next the bores are reamed close to their final dimension. At this point the bore is quite smooth, but will get a final treatment later before it is finished.
